GENERAL GUN SAFETY

1.  Always have your safety “on” and the chamber open when you are around the lodge area. If you have a double barrel or over-and-under shotgun, please have them broken open.

2. Muzzle control is better than any safety. The safety could fail, but if the muzzle is ALWAYS pointed in a safe direction, nobody will be hurt if the gun were to accidentally discharge. Always have your muzzle pointed in a safe direction (normally straight up) even if the gun is unloaded.

3. Never load your gun unless you are standing inside the trap range, or in the field after the guide has told you and your party to load up.

4. You are required to shoot your gun (5 times/no charge) before you hunt. This makes sure that your gun is in good working condition and also indicates your level of experience to your guide. A White Oak staff member must be present before you use the trap range.

5. You must wear hunter’s orange while in the field. Wearing both an orange cap and vest is best.

6. To ensure an exciting and safe hunting experience, three is a maximum number of hunters allowed on any course at one time. Only 2 hunters are allowed to shoot at one time.

7. Alcohol consumption is absolutely not allowed at White Oak.

8. Georgia Law requires hunters to have guns plugged for a maximum of 3 shells when hunting upland birds.

9. White Oak provides free of charge, the necessary licenses for all of its bird hunting guests.

10. Good bird dogs are expensive and very hard to find. If you follow the safety rules listed on this sheet, and follow the instructions given at the safety speech (prior to your hunt) a bird dog should never be shot. However, accidents do happen and we realize that fact. If you should shoot a dog and kill it, you will be required to pay the fair market value of the dog (they start at $3000.00). If the dog is hurt but does not die, you will be required to pay the initial veterinary bill and any other subsequent bills/costs, until the dog is completely well. If the dog is unable to hunt as a result of such injuries, you will still be required to pay the fair market value of the dog as previously stated. Please be careful when shooting around the dogs and always know where the dogs are before you take a shot.

11. What can you shoot? If you are on a half-day quail hunt, your package includes the harvest of 15 quail. We do not guarantee that you will kill any birds; we only guarantee you a reasonable chance at each of the respective limits. Additional birds are available for release.

SAFETY IN THE FIELD

1.  GUN HANDLING

    a.  Do not load gun until you are in the field and guide has said it is OK to load.

     b.  ALWAYS point muzzle high and away from hunting party and dogs.

     c.  Have gun safety on before loading and reloading.

     d.  Keep gun safety on until birds are in the air.

     e.  Put gun safety back on immediately after shooting at birds.

2. WALKING IN THE FIELD

   a.  Always have your safety on.

    b.  Entire hunting party should move through the fields abreast of the guide (side by side in a line)

    c.  Always carry your gun with the muzzle high and away from the other hunters, guide and dogs.

    d. Be careful of stubble, stumps, vines and all other obstacles that are naturally in the woods and fields which cause hunters to trip and fall.

3. APPROACHING DOGS ON POINT

a.  The guide will bring you in from the direction offering the best and safest shooting; this may not always be from the rear of the dogs.

b.  Carry your gun in on the pointed dogs high and away from the hunting party and dogs (International Skeet Position)

c.  Know the exact location of the dogs before shooting birds.

d.  Keep safety on until the birds are in the air.

HUNTING TERMINATION POLICY

The customer is the boss around the lodge. However, once you are in the field and hunting, the guide is the boss. He/she has the authority to terminate a hunt for any reason deemed adequate. We have never terminated a hunt, and we hope it never happens. However, if a guide must repeatedly warn a customer about gun safety, or other safety matters, the guide will bring you back to the lodge. Should this ever happen, the bill for the hunt will be adjusted.

I acknowledge receiving, and reading the attached White Oak Hunting Preserve safety rules and agree to abide by them. I also acknowledge that White Oak Hunting Preserve will exercise ordinary care to manage such hunting and shooting activities under reasonable safety rules so to reduce the risk of harm to participants. Nevertheless, I acknowledge and assume such risk and hereby waive and release, on my own behalf and any minor children who participate in such activities at White Oak Hunting Preserve it’s officers, employees, and agents, from any claim of damage or injury suffered by me at any time while on White Oak Hunting Preserve property or properties under its control which is not the direct result of willful gross negligence of White Oak Hunting Preserve, it’s officers, employers, or agents.
